Attentional limits in visual search with and without dorsal parietal dysfunction: space-based window or object-based span?

چکیده
Attentional resource and distribution are specifically impaired in simultanagnosia, also the visuo-attentional form of developmental dyslexia. Both clinical conditions conceived as a limitation simultaneous visual processing after superior parietal lobule (SPL) dysfunction (review Valdois et al., 2019). However, reduced space-based attentional window (i.e. limited eccentricity at which target object can be identified, Khan al. 2016) has been demonstrated simultanagnosia versus object-based span number objects processed each fixation, Bosse 2007) In healthy individuals, cost reaction times per item serial search tasks suggests that group is simultaneously time, but this undefined depends on complexity task. Healthy individuals patient with performed involving either symbols (made separable features) or made non-separable features, distractors were all identical dissimilar. We used moving paradigm to determine whether task was “working space” span” control bilateral SPL damage. found color comprising feature dissimilar window; window, well mean saccade amplitude displace it across display, independent set size, thus inconsistent an span. symbol feature-absent feature-present dissimilar, we observed decreased size performance could not mimicked by single diameter; instead participants seemed process fixed time (object-based span). Following lesions, IG similar normal window. contrast, her cost-per-item increased dramatically, demonstrating clear deficit perception. These results confirmed specific contribution multiple features (like letters), more dramatically when they different, explains difficulty for reading beginner case dysfunction.

Cortical mechanisms of space-based and object-based attentional control.
Visual attention, the mechanism by which observers select relevant or important information from scenes, can be deployed to locations in space or to spatially invariant object representations. Studies have examined both the modulatory effects of attention on the strength of extrastriate cortical representations, and the control of attention by parietal and frontal cortical circuits. Subregions ...
متن کاملIs there feature-based attentional selection in visual search?
A new paradigm combines attentional cuing and rapid serial visual presentation to disentangle the effects of perceptual filtering and location selection. Observers search successive, superimposed arrays, in which feature values are alternated for a target numeral among letters. Two dimensions, size (small, large) and color (red, green) are tested. Selective attention to feature values is jointl...
متن کاملVisual statistical learning can drive object-based attentional selection.
Recent work on statistical learning has demonstrated that environmental regularities can influence aspects of perception, such as familiarity judgments. Here, we ask if statistical co-occurrences accumulated from visual statistical learning could form objects that serve as the units of attention (i.e., object-based attention). Experiment 1 demonstrated that, after observers first viewed pairs o...

Object-based benefits without object-based representations.
Influential theories of visual working memory have proposed that the basic units of memory are integrated object representations. Key support for this proposal is provided by the same object benefit: It is easier to remember multiple features of a single object than the same set of features distributed across multiple objects. Here, we replicate the object benefit but demonstrate that features ...
